Course Overview
This course equips dental and medical professionals with practical communication skills to address fluoride hesitancy. Learn how to use motivational interviewing and evidence-based information to respond to concerns, counter misinformation, and guide patients toward informed choices. We’ll review recent research on fluoride safety, debunk myths, and highlight the role of health providers as trusted messengers. Through real-world examples, participants will gain tools to build trust, foster understanding, and encourage acceptance of fluoride as a vital part of oral health.

Presenter Bios
Megan Miller, DDS
Dr. Megan Miller is the founder of Expedition Pediatric Dentistry in Bellevue, WA. A Texas native, she earned her DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry and completed her pediatric residency at UT Health Houston/Texas Children’s Hospital. After practicing in Texas, she relocated to Washington in 2018, where she serves on multiple dental committees and leads an annual dental mission trip to Mexico with Amigos de los Niños. She enjoys hiking, gardening, watercolor painting, and travel.
Teresa Guillien, MPA
Teresa Guillien is Managing Director at Resource Media, a nonprofit creative change agency. She develops communications strategies for public health, specializing in countering misinformation and framing values-based messages on issues such as vaccines and water fluoridation. Her clients have included the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Public Health Association, and the Gates Foundation. She previously held senior communications roles at PATH and has consulted for global nonprofits focused on health, gender equity, and education. She holds an MPA from the University of Washington.
Susan Fisher-Owens, MD, MPH
Dr. Susan Fisher-Owens is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive & Restorative Dental Sciences at UCSF. She serves as Lead Consultant on Fluoride for the California Department of Public Health and helped establish an award-winning oral health clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Her research, cited internationally, focuses on children’s oral health and reducing disparities in care.
