Steve Metcalf
Strategic Communications Manager
Steve tells stories and helps others tell their stories. His role at the Foundation is to help:
- Identify communications objectives.
- Motivate teams to think strategically about means to desired outcomes.
- Offer consultation about message development.
- Infuse the joy of storytelling into his work and the work of others.
Steve has been a communicator for more than 20 years. Before he joined the Foundation in 2021, he worked in the communications office at Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department for nearly six years. While there, he helped lead the health department’s communications efforts during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, he had a roughly 15-year career in TV news in which he worked primarily as a producer at stations across the country. His broadcast journalism career included coverage of disasters—natural and manmade—terrorism attacks, elections, and court cases on local, state, national, and international levels.
Steve is originally from Los Angeles. He moved to Washington state to attend Whitman College in Walla Walla where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in French literature. A few years later, he attended Michigan State University where he earned a Master of Arts in journalism.
When not working, you can find Steve listening to music, watching movies and TV shows, reading—fiction mostly—and staying active. He enjoys the outdoor activities the Northwest has to offer, but he’s become obsessed with the HIIT workouts at Orangetheory Fitness.
