Course Summary:

Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious and relatively common disorder that can have several interactions with dentistry. This presentation will be a succinct review of the evidence base on the topic. The relationship between OSA and craniofacial growth and development, as well as the current evidence for managing with dental therapies will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the pathopshysiology of sleep-disordered breathing
  2. Define the relationship between dentofacial morphology and OSA
  3. Evaluate the evidence for maxillary expansion and mandibular advancement for OSA

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Benjamin Pliska is an associate professor of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry, an orthodontic consultant at BC Children’s Hospital, and maintains a private practice in Vancouver as a certified specialist in Orthodontics. He is a graduate of Western University School of Dentistry and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Pliska’s research interests include airway imaging and sleep medicine, topics on which he frequently lectures and publishes.
